<%@LANGUAGE="JAVASCRIPT" CODEPAGE="65001"%> Design and Make Assignment: (DMA) - Celtic Design Casting
This design and make assignment illustrates how we use animations to give students learning resources; in this case examples of Celtic art, information about things to consider when designing a product that will be cast in pewter and information about casting pewter using an MDF mould.

Design Brief

Design and make a pendant based on Celtic designs.

Specification

The pendant must be:

  • based on Celtic designs
  • made from cast pewter
  • must be suitable for hanging from a string, a leather thong or a chain necklace.

Research

Use research methods to find information about the Celts:

  • find out where they came from,
  • where they migrated to
  • when they arrived in Britain.

Also research:

Recording Information and Designs

Record your findings using information and communication technology (ICT) or using notes and sketches.

Use your findings to develop a design for a pendant based on Celtic designs.

Developing a Design

Using a Celtic design as your starting point, develop a design for a pendant using notes and sketches or computer aided drawing/design (CAD). Remember, the product will be a pewter casting, so do not make the design too complicated.

Final Design

Draw your final design using CAD. Add a "runner" to one edge of the design so that when a mould is made, molten pewter may be poured down the runner and into the mould.

Design and Make the Mould

Use a computer numerically controlled (CNC) router to route your design in MDF. Make sure that all parts of your design will be connected. (see the pewter casting animation below).

Cast Pewter into the Mould

Study the animation to learn how to design your mould and how to cast pewter.

Only lead free pewter should be used.

Safety

Write a Risk Assessment for routing MDF and casting pewter in an MDF mould. List the precautions you would take to reduce the risks to your health and safety and the personal protective equipment (PPE) that you would use.

Refer to CLEAPSS Model Risk Assessments for Design and Technology in Secondary Schools and Colleges.
